X Ambassadors Raise Funds For Abortion Network

With the rollback of women’s rights severely pushed forward by the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, many across the nation have taken to the streets in protest.

Many of these networks are driven by volunteer power. Do you have experience volunteering for an issue that’s dear to you?
Sam: In the last election, I campaigned for Biden at the very end. I was phone banking. I really did the phone banking thing which is exhausting. It's emotionally so exhausting but it's great. So satisfying, so rewarding to feel like you're actually out there campaigning for a better world instead of just kind of sitting around and hoping and praying that things are gonna work out. That was the last thing that I can think of. Beyond that, we've been lucky enough with the platform that we have that we can get involved with a lot of different organizations who are fighting for social justice issues that we believe in. We've done a lot with different organizations over the years. I wish I could rattle off the names of all of them. Done a lot of work with ACLU. We did something with an organization called Foundation for Fighting Blindness. My brother is blind in the band so that's an organization that's near and dear to us. We've worked with Trevor Project and a couple other organizations too. It's nice to be able to feel like we have the ability to actually do something and not just kind of like sit on our asses.

If you were to host a different fundraiser but it had to involve something other than music, what would you do?
Sam: I have really honed in on my mixology skills over the pandemic so I would host a nice party and I'd be making cocktails. I'd be behind the bar. Tyler would be my barback. I'd be making Last Words, Last of the Oaxacans, Old Fashioneds, Penicillins. I'd be making drinks for everyone. And some non-alcoholic beverages for those who don't drink.

Which organizations, figures, or news sources do you follow to stay informed?

Sam: I follow the National Network of Abortion Funds now to keep abreast of everything that they're doing and ACLU is a fantastic organization. Planned Parenthood. Those are the first ones that come to my brain.

Many of these networks are driven by volunteer power. Do you have experience volunteering for an issue that’s dear to you?
I do. When I was 17, I began working with a foundation called Songs For Love and what they do is they create personalized songs for children with terminal illness. I was a writer-producer up until this past year, so for four years I was super passionate about helping these kids in any way I could and I knew I couldn't directly help their illness but I hoped that I could help some of the results of the illness or some of the side effects through my music. Super passionate about that and I am so lucky and honored I got to do that for four years. It was my passion.

If you were to throw your own event but it had to involve something other than music, what would you do?
My whole mission, inside and outside of music, is to raise mental health awareness. My mother is a counselor as well, a high school and middle school counselor, and so I would try to set up some type of free therapy benefit where it's literally a bunch of counselors in a room. You have your own, a lot of time, and it's free. It's basically to connect you to other counselors and other therapists long-term. It's like a counselor intervention, like a therapist's intervention, where you just place everyone with your people. I don't know if that sounds fun but...

Which organizations, figures, or news sources do you follow to stay informed?
As a musician and someone who is not super well-versed in politics, or not a professional, what's important to me and I find but I want to give to my audience, is a more digestible version of the news because I think it's important that it's accessible to everyone and that everyone understands it. I listen to Up First by NPR which is a podcast and that breaks it down for me, just hearing about it and being told like I'm in a conversation. And the other email subscription that I use is called The Skim and what they do is they quite literally break down the news into more digestible words and they have links to every type of definition that you might not know, links to different sections of those emails. And so, just like I said, it's all about accessibility to everyone so those are the two that I use.

Many of these networks are driven by volunteer power. Do you have experience volunteering for an issue that’s dear to you?
Yes. I lived in Boston for a while and I volunteered for City Music. It was affiliated with Berklee. I taught songwriting classes to kids in underserved communities and it was really fun for me because I'm just talking about songwriting with kids that love songwriting. I think that the schools have not really given enough funding to creative arts and music and all of that. It's sad because it's such a powerful tool for healing. In our country right now, we need a lot of healing so the kids could use it.

If you were to throw your own fundraiser but it had to involve something other than music, what would you do?
I think I would do a drawing thing. I just got into drawing. I am not very good at it but I think that's the best part of it because it can be as bad as I want it to be and that feels really healing and cool.

Which organizations, figures, or news sources do you follow to stay informed?
I try to steer clear of any mainstream media because it's just a lot of fear-mongering, a lot of misinformation. I try to follow anybody that I feel like I can learn from, anybody that is different from me, anybody from an underserved community, anybody from the LGBTQ community. Specifically, I love AOC. I love Van Jones who is a reporter on CNN. Really anybody that I feel is different from me, I am following to learn from.

Many of these networks are driven by volunteer power. Do you have experience volunteering for an issue that’s dear to you?
I canvassed for Bernie a couple times when he ran. Other than that and phone banking, mostly for the Bernie Sanders campaign, donations is the main stuff I've done.

If you were to host a different fundraiser but it had to involve something other than music, what would you do?
I would maybe try to get my hands on a cool film reel of a movie that maybe few people have access to on film and I would ask an indie cinema if they would screen it for an upped ticket price.

Which organizations, figures, or news sources do you follow to stay informed?
Honestly, The New York Times. I read CNN, MSNBC, I watch that.
